I am

File:Frans Hals - Portret van René Descartes.jpg"I think therefore I am."  I always thought this was kind of a silly thing to say.  But apparently in the context of the statement, Rene Descartes was suggesting that if we doubt then it indicates independent intelligence and thus being.  In other words, doubting is evidence of our existence.  Who would have guessed that all these questions and doubts I have would be a means of evidencing my individuality and even my existence.

In the Bible it is said that God introduced himself to Pharaoh via Moses, as "I am".  I expect Biblical scholars have written all kinds of essays and had insights into what this really means.  But, I wonder if maybe, in line with Descartes' idea, God is declaring existence, intelligence, and therefore the capacity for doubt.

If so maybe questions and doubt aren't such a weakness at all.

Apparently Descartes struggled with the question about the existence of God.  He was a practicing Catholic in spite of his doubts.  I like Rene Descartes.  I would like to meet him sometime, if such a thing is possible.
